Dog Tricks – Advanced Level, Intelligence Training and Character Development, Part II

Introduction – why dogs need difficult tricks

When your dog already knows basic commands – "sit," "lie down," "stay" – the moment comes when the real fun begins.
This is when you can reach the next level of communication and understanding with your dog.

Advanced tricks are more than just showing off in front of friends.
It's a way to:

  • develop dog's intelligence and memory,
  • improve self-control and concentration,
  • deepen the bond and trust between you,
  • and give the dog satisfaction from learning and success.

Many trainers say, "a tired dog is a happy dog" – and they are right, but it's not just about physical tiredness. Dogs need mental challenges – these are as important to them as walks or play.

Did you know that… Research from the University of Helsinki showed that dogs regularly learning new tasks have lower stress levels and greater mental resilience.

How dog intelligence works

Dog intelligence is not just about following commands. It also includes:

  • problem-solving ability,
  • understanding the owner's emotions,
  • memory and associating situations,
  • and the ability to learn through observation.

That's why learning tricks is not play – it's brain training.

Dogs learn best when they have:

  1. clear goal – they know what they are rewarded for,
  2. consistency – the owner uses the same words and gestures,
  3. rewards – praise, treat
  4. good mood – emotions strongly influence learning.

Did you know that…
A Border Collie named Chaser could recognize over 1000 toy names – he is considered the smartest dog in the world.

Therefore, whether you have a Jack Russell Terrier, Australian Shepherd, or poodle – every dog can develop its "IQ" if given the opportunity.

Advanced level – logical and complex tricks

When your dog already knows the basics, it's time for tricks that require thinking and a sequence of actions.
It's not about the dog acting automatically, but about understanding the cause-and-effect chain.

Examples of difficult tricks:

  1. "Find the object" – hide the toy and ask to find it.
    • Teaches memory and olfactory work.
    • Develop gradually – start with simple hiding places, then make it harder.
  2. “Bring the leash” – very practical and engaging.
    • The dog learns to recognize objects by name.
    • Reinforce learning with the command “drop” – it helps in everyday situations.
  3. “Open the door” or “turn off the light”
    • These tricks require strength and precision.
    • For large breeds is great physical and mental stimulation.
  4. “Toy cleanup”
    • The dog learns to organize its things by putting them into a container.
    • It strengthens intelligence and long-term memory.

Tip:
Advanced tricks teach the dog in small steps. Break the task into stages: “approach,” “pick up,” “bring.”
Reward every stage – this is called a behavior chain.

Nosework and scent training – a gym for the dog’s brain

One of the best ways to develop a dog’s intelligence is nosework – scent work.
It’s not only great fun but also a method to reduce stress and improve concentration.

Every dog, regardless of breed, has a brilliant nose – can detect scents even at a concentration of 1 in 100 million!
That’s why it’s worth using.

Simple exercises at home:

  • Hide treats in boxes or towels,
  • Use scent toys, teach the dog to recognize different smells, e.g., coffee, cinnamon, vanilla.

Did you know that…
Scent work not only develops intelligence but also lowers cortisol levels (stress hormone) in dogs.
That’s why it’s recommended even for anxious dogs

Training emotions and self-control

An advanced dog is not only a smart dog – it’s also a calm dog.
Self-control training helps the dog manage emotions: excitement, frustration, the urge to chase.

How to practice it:

  • “Wait” at the bowl – the dog learns that the reward comes when it stays calm.
  • “Don’t touch” – helps to stop instinct, e.g., when eating or near cats.
  • “Stay” in difficult situations – the dog learns to control its impulse.

Did you know that…
Dogs that regularly practice self-control are less aggressive and learn complex commands faster.

Combining tricks into sequences

When the dog already knows a few individual tricks, it’s time to teach it to combine commands into a whole.
It’s nothing more than creating a “choreography” – a sequence of logically connected behaviors.

How to do it step by step:

  1. Choose two simple commands, e.g., “sit” and “give paw”.
  2. Combine them into one command: “sit – paw”.
  3. Reward only when the dog performs both actions.
  4. Gradually add more: “sit – paw – spin”.

Such sequences develop memory and concentration.
For a dog, this is a real mental challenge that brings great satisfaction.

Did you know that…
Dogs learn sequences faster if they receive verbal praise after each command, but a reward (treat) only at the end of the whole series.

Motivation and concentration

Advanced training requires greater persistence – both from the dog and the human.
A treat alone is no longer enough. You need to find what really drives your dog.

Types of motivation:

It's worth mixing these forms. Sometimes just "good dog!" with a smile works stronger than a treat.

How to keep your dog's attention:

  • Change exercises every few minutes.
  • Introduce new environmental elements (e.g. training in the park).
  • Practice at different times – the dog learns flexibility.

Pro tip:

If your dog loses focus, don’t punish it – take a short break and return to an easier command. For a dog, failure is just a lack of understanding, not bad will.

The smartest breeds for learning tricks

Some dogs learn instantly, others need more time. It's not about intelligence but type of intelligence.

Breeds that learn tricks the easiest:

  1. Border Collie – a true genius. Quickly associates commands, loves cooperation.
  2. Australian Shepherd – focused, obedient, very sensitive to tone of voice.
  3. Poodle – intelligent and eager to learn, ideal for patient owners.
  4. Golden Retriever – gentle, eager to cooperate, responds well to praise.
  5. Jack Russell Terrier – temperamental, full of energy, great for active training.
  6. Labrador Retriever – patient, learns through repetition.
  7. Cane Corso – strong character but very loyal, requires calm consistency.

Did you know that…
There are no "stupid" dogs – only those who learn differently.
For example, hunting dogs have excellent scent memory but respond more slowly to verbal signals.

Every breed has its potential. The art is to learn your dog's language, not force it to act like another.

Accessories that make learning easier

When teaching advanced tricks, it is worth using tools that support the dog's concentration and safety.

A must-have in the trainer's arsenal:

  • Clicker – precise reward signal.
  • Scent mat - trains patience and concentration.
  • Logic toys – e.g. puzzles with treats.
  • Training harness – better than a collar, do not restrict movement.
  • Non-slip mat – for safety during movement tricks.
  • Training treats – small, soft, low-calorie.

Did you know that…

Dogs learn faster when you change the type of reward – sometimes a toy, sometimes a treat, sometimes praise.
This is the so-called “variable reward” – it works like the best motivator!

The most common mistakes in advanced training:

Even experienced caregivers sometimes make mistakes that hinder learning.
They usually result from rushing or having too high expectations of the dog.

Here’s what to avoid:

  1. Moving too quickly to harder tricks – the dog can’t keep up and starts to stress.
  2. Lack of consistency – today “sit” means “sit,” tomorrow “sit down” – this confuses the dog.
  3. Repeating a command without response – the dog stops paying attention to words.
  4. Scolding for mistakes – clips the wings. Dogs learn through reward, not stress.
  5. Training at the wrong time – a hungry, tired, or distracted dog will not cooperate.

Did you know that…
Dogs can learn even during rest! In the REM sleep phase, they consolidate memories – that’s why short sessions are better than long ones.

How to keep your dog’s passion and joy

Advanced training is a long-term process. The biggest challenge is maintaining joy and curiosity in the dog.
Learning should be a pleasure, not an obligation.

 A few ways:

  • Train in different places – home, park, forest. New smells and stimuli stimulate curiosity.
  • Mix old tricks with new ones – reinforcement and discovery are the perfect combination.
  • Let your dog choose – sometimes let them decide which toy or trick they want to practice.
  • Take breaks – after each session, give your dog a moment of relaxation, petting, play, or a walk.
  • Don’t compare your dog to others – everyone learns at their own pace.

Did you know that…
Dogs that train with joy have better long-term memory and more often spontaneously perform learned commands – even after several weeks of break.

Summary – a smart, calm, and happy dog

Difficult tricks are not just show-offs. They are above all learning a common language.
Every session, even a short one, is a building block for trust and understanding.

It doesn’t matter if you’re teaching your dog “turn off the light” or just “bring the leash” – what counts is that you’re doing it together.
Your dog feels your emotions, so the most important thing during training is to have joy, calm, and love in them.
