Dog food – how to choose the best one? BULT nutrition guide

What you will learn from this article?

This guide was prepared at BULT together with food technologists, veterinarians,
veterinarians and animal behaviorists. After reading:

● you will learn the main types of dog food and their purposes,
● you will learn to read ingredients and analyze nutritional values,
● you will understand how to choose food according to the dog's age, activity, and health,
● you will find out what prices and reviews of foods really mean,
● you will see how to sensibly buy food in an online store,
● you will learn BULT's approach to dog nutrition – based on science, not on
marketing slogans.

Why choosing dog food is so important

Good dog food is not “just food” – it is:

● fuel for muscles,
● building blocks for bones and tissues,
● immune support,
● a real impact on the length and quality of the dog's life.

A poorly chosen diet can result in:

● overweight or underweight,
● skin and coat problems,
● diarrhea, bloating, and other intestinal troubles,
● burden on joints and internal organs.

At BULT we often repeat:

“Food is daily nutritional therapy – it either supports the dog's health or quietly
it weakens them.”

Types of dog food – an overview of options

Dry food

This is the most popular type of food:

● convenient to store,
● easy to portion,
● often more calorie-dense (less water).

Works well for healthy dogs with a proper body weight. It is worth choosing dry foods with a high meat content and as few unnecessary fillers as possible.

Wet food

Wet food:

● contain more water (often 70–80%),
● have a more intense taste and smell,
● can be easier to eat for older dogs or those with dental problems.

Often recommended for overweight dogs or those who drink little water. At BULT, wet foods
we also treat as a great base for mixing with dry food.

Grain-free and hypoallergenic food

  • Grain-free foods contain instead of grains, for example, potatoes, sweet potatoes, or peas. They can be a good choice for dogs with gluten intolerance or sensitive digestive systems.
  • Hypoallergenic / single-protein foods are based on one protein source (e.g., turkey, lamb).

They are used for dogs with food allergies or in elimination diets.
Everyday food vs. veterinary food

● Everyday food (complete) – intended for healthy dogs, covers their
nutrient requirements.

● Veterinary food – used for specific health problems (kidneys,
liver, diabetes, obesity, allergies). It should always be introduced under the supervision of
veterinarian.

BULT works on the side of everyday foods and treats, but our nutrition department regularly
consults recipes with veterinarians to ensure they are safe also for sensitive dogs.

Foods for different life stages and dog sizes
A well-balanced offer should include foods:

● for puppies,
● for adult dogs,
● for seniors,
● for small, medium, and large dogs.

They differ, among other things, in calorie content, kibble size, chondroprotective additives (for joints), or protein and fat content.

Ingredients and nutritional values – how to read labels?

To consciously choose food, you need to know how to read the label. On the package, you will find, among others:

Composition (list of raw materials)
Pay attention to:

● main protein source – preferably when the first ingredient is meat or fresh
meat,
● animal protein – the dog is a relative carnivore, its diet
should be based primarily on animal protein,
● oils and fats – including sources of omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., salmon oil – EPA/DHA),
● carbohydrates and dietary fiber – sources of energy and support for intestinal function,
● functional additives – e.g., prebiotics, yeast, herbs, chondroprotectors, vitamins, and
mineral content.

At BULT, we place great importance on clearly indicating the amount and type
of the meat used. We do not practice "label illusion" – simple composition, clear proportions.
Composition analysis (so-called analytics)
Most often you will see:

● crude protein,
● crude fat,
● crude fiber,
● crude ash,
● moisture.
In practice:
● protein – building blocks of muscles, enzymes, hormones,
● fats – main energy source and vitamin carrier,
● fiber – supports intestinal function,
● ash – contains, among others, mineral components (too high can be unfavorable).
Good food combines these elements into a balanced whole, tailored to the needs of a specific dog.

How to choose the right food for your dog?

Choosing food should not start with "what's on sale," but with the question: what kind of dog do I have at home?

Age and life stage

● Puppy – higher demand for protein, energy, minerals.
● Adult dog – stabilizing diet, maintaining proper body weight.
● Senior – lighter food, support for joints, heart, and kidneys.

Size and breed

A 4 kg dog and a 40 kg dog are two different worlds:
● different metabolism,
● different joint loads,
● different growth rates.

Pay attention to whether the food is intended for:

● small dogs,
● medium,
● large.

Activity level

● "couch" dog vs. sport dog,
● working dog, running alongside a bike, training sports – needs more energy,
protein and fat,
● overweight dog – light food / lower calorie content.
Health and sensitivity of the digestive tract
● food allergies,
● intolerances (e.g., grains, chicken),
● sensitive digestive system,
● chronic diseases (e.g., kidneys, liver, pancreas) – always consult with
veterinarian.

As BULT, we often emphasize:

“There is no one best food for all dogs. There is the best food
for your dog, at this specific moment in its life.”

Prices and reviews of dog foods – does more expensive mean better?

The dog food market is huge – from very cheap "supermarket" products to premium and super-premium foods.

How to look at the price?
Price usually reflects:

● raw material quality (type of meat, meat vs. filler ratio),
● recipe precision (presence of functional additives, quality of supplementation),
● production standards.

Cheap food often has:

● more grains and fillers,
● less meat content,
● a worse amino acid and mineral profile.

However, the most expensive food is not always the "best" for your dog – it may have, for example, a perfect "on paper" composition but not work for a dog with a sensitive digestive system.

Other caregivers' opinions are helpful, but:

● they concern a specific dog, not yours,
● they are often based on emotions ("likes/dislikes") rather than ingredient analysis,
● they do not replace consultations with a veterinarian or dog nutritionist.
At BULT, we encourage:
● combine other caregivers' opinions with reading the ingredients,
● observe your dog's coat condition, stool, energy, and body weight after changing food.

Buying food online – how to use stores wisely
online stores?

Online stores offer a huge selection but it’s easy to get lost in it.
What to pay attention to in an online store?

● clear ingredients and analysis on the website,
● clear separation of maintenance and veterinary diets,
● information about purpose (age, size, activity level),
● the option to buy smaller packages "to try",
● convenient delivery forms and the possibility to stock up.

Sets, samples, flavor rotation, it's worth:

● using flavor sets,
● introducing new flavors gradually,
● rotating proteins (e.g., turkey, beef, lamb) if the dog tolerates them well.

At BULT, we especially focus on developing:

● wet foods with a high meat content,
● training treats and natural chews,
● flavor sets that make it easier to find the dog's favorite combination.

How BULT approaches dog nutrition – our expert approach

BULT is a Polish brand created by people who truly live with dogs – and the science of their
nutrition. Our recipes are created in cooperation with:

● food technologists,
● veterinarians,
● animal behaviorists,
● practitioners with many years of experience working with dogs.

What is key for us?

● High animal protein content – because dogs are not "small humans on four
paws.”
● Simple, clear ingredients – without unnecessary chemicals and additives.
● Treats that add value – not just "tasty" but also functional: training,
reward, support for teeth or skin.
● Practical approach – we know that food must be not only healthy but also tasty and
convenient to serve.

The most common nutritional mistakes made by dog caregivers

During nutritional consultations and conversations with caregivers, we most often see the same main mistakes:

  • Feeding table scraps – human food is seasoned, salty, often fatty. It is not suitable for dogs.
  • Chocolate as a "reward" – cocoa contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs.
  • Mixing several foods “at once” without a plan – makes it difficult to assess which food benefits the dog.
  • Overfeeding treats – treats can “eat up” a large part of the daily calorie intake.
  • Changing food overnight – often ends with diarrhea and stomach pain.
  • Choosing food only by price or advertisement – without reading the composition and analyzing the specific dog’s needs.

At BULT we teach:
“The best diet is one that is tailored, consistent, and consciously
selected.”

Summary – step-by-step food selection scheme

1. Assess the dog’s age, body weight, activity level, and health status.
2. Decide whether you are looking for maintenance food or if the dog requires a veterinary diet (after
consultation with a vet).
3. Choose the type of food: dry, wet, mixed, possibly grain-free or
hypoallergenic.
4. Review the ingredients – look for high animal protein content, reasonable amounts of
fat, functional additives.
5. Check the composition analysis (protein, fat, fiber, ash).
6. Start with a smaller package, introduce the food gradually.
7. Observe the dog: coat, skin, energy, stools, weight.
8. If something worries you – consult a veterinarian or dog nutritionist.

FAQ – most common questions about dog food

Is dry or wet food better?

It depends on the dog. Dry food is convenient and calorie-dense, wet food hydrates better and can be
more attractive in taste. Often a mixed model works great: dry + wet.

Can I feed my dog homemade food?

Only if the diet is balanced for the dog (e.g., BARF diet or cooked meals planned by
specialist). Leftovers from the human plate are a bad idea – salt, spices, fat, and products
harmful (e.g., chocolate, onion, garlic).

How often should I change the food?

If the dog tolerates the food well and has normal test results – there is no need for frequent
changes. Always introduce food changes gradually, over 5–7 days.

My dog has a sensitive stomach – what to choose?

It’s worth considering food:

● with a single protein source,
● with a limited number of ingredients,
● with higher digestibility.

For chronic digestive problems – consultation with a veterinarian is mandatory.
veterinarian.

Do treats spoil a dog’s diet?

Treats can be a great training tool, but their calorie content should be included in the daily energy allowance. That’s why at BULT we create treats that combine the reward function with a good composition.

How can BULT help me choose food?

As a brand collaborating with food technologists, veterinarians, and behaviorists,
we help select food and treats according to the dog's needs – from age, through activity, to
gastrointestinal sensitivity. Our goal is for a full bowl to be not only
tasty, but also wisely composed.
