Purebred dog or mixed breed?

Have you made the decision to have a dog? Have you considered all the pros and cons? Have you honestly considered all the duties, costs, and limitations? It's time to think about whether to choose a purebred dog or a mixed breed. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option?

Purebred dog

Breeds created by humans were meant to fulfill specific tasks, characterized by particular utility, e.g., terriers exterminated pests, and hunting dogs provided game. Nowadays, breeding focuses mainly on the dog's appearance and better coexistence with humans. However, one must not forget what is written in the dog's genes.

Choosing a breed usually starts with paying attention to those you like the most in appearance. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that. It is important that you like the dog's exterior, but remember that this cannot be the only criterion when buying a dog. Specific breeds differ in character. Get familiar with the descriptions. Look for a dog that will suit you. Consider liveliness, energy, and exercise needs (some only need short walks, others require physical activity for several hours a day). Pay attention to the living conditions required for a given breed (some are suitable for small apartments, others need a lot of space). Think about how much time you can devote to grooming (if little, choose dogs with low-maintenance coats). If your search narrows down clearly, talk to people who have a dog of the breed you are interested in. They will surely give you valuable advice and tips.

If you decide on a purebred dog, carefully look for a good breeder. Contact the Kennel Club, which will point you to professional breeders. Beware of puppy mills, where animals are kept in unsuitable conditions and bitches are used for continuous breeding. In such places, there is a higher risk that the puppy will be burdened with genetic diseases. A reliable breeder always offers advice and guidance on raising a puppy from their litter. Before selling a dog, they make sure it goes to responsible hands. They provide the dog with a starter kit and stay in contact with the new owner.

A purebred dog is a good choice if:

  • you care about a specific appearance and character of the dog (however, remember that individuals within a breed differ from each other)

  •  you want to get involved in shows and competitions

  •  you plan to register a breeding kennel (there are several conditions to meet, which you can learn about at the Kennel Club)

  •  you have sufficient funds to buy a dog from a professional breeding kennel

Mixed breed

Mixed breeds, mutts, or multi-breed dogs are those most often resulting from accidental breeding. Predicting the appearance of such a puppy is usually difficult; the chance of success increases when there is enough knowledge about its ancestors. But one thing is certain – every mixed breed is unique!

Although among purebred dogs, due to unnatural breeding methods, there may be susceptibility to diseases, the claim that mixed breeds are healthier and smarter is just a generalization. A mixed breed can also struggle with various diseases or behavioral anomalies (especially if born and raised in extremely difficult conditions).

A mixed breed is a good choice if:

  • you are not a big fan of a specific breed

  •  you care about providing the best possible conditions for the dog, regardless of its appearance and size

  •  you are prepared for “surprises” in the dog's appearance and size

  •  you care about saving a dog – in shelters and rescues, the largest percentage of dogs are mixed breeds.

Remember!

Whether you have a mixed breed or a purebred dog, the quality of your relationship largely depends on you (actually, mostly on you!). You can be happy with any dog if you make the effort. You need to take care of meeting all the pet's needs and provide appropriate conditions.

Being a dog guardian is a huge responsibility – whether your home is shared with a champion or a mutt with a bitten ear. All dogs, without exception, deserve their person. A person who will love wisely.
