We’re not afraid of winter! How to prepare dogs for the winter season?

All good things come to an end quickly. When the warm months are behind you, autumn passes, and you are on the straightforward path to entering the winter season, you usually prepare by taking warm sweaters, hats, and heavy shoes out of the closet. You may also notice an increased amount of fur on the couch or floor. This means your dog has also made the first preparations for winter. Changing fur is a natural adaptation to the dropping temperature. You, as the owner, should also think about a few things that will help your pet survive the winter period in good health and well-being.

How to strengthen your dog's immunity?

First and foremost, you need to take care of the overall condition of the body. During winter, it is worth supporting your dog's immunity with appropriate supplements, especially if they tend to get sick often. Also, don't forget about a healthy, balanced diet. It is essential to provide your dog with all the nutrients needed for the proper functioning of the body. If you notice your pet losing weight in winter, it may be necessary to increase the calorie content of meals. Weight loss can be related to increased energy expenditure to warm the body. If you have doubts about how to feed your dog properly, contact an animal nutritionist.

Clothing for dogs in winter

You can prevent excessive heat loss by using dog clothes. They are a good solution especially for small breeds. The smaller the animal, the more unfavorable the ratio of body mass to its volume, and consequently, it has to use more energy to warm up. It is worth remembering to choose the right size of clothing. It should not be too tight to restrict movement, but too loose will slip off, which can frustrate the dog. The very fact of putting something on the body can also be unpleasant for the pet. Dogs accustomed to going out in harnesses will definitely handle this better. However, in most cases, proper training and positive reinforcement will help the dog get used to wearing a coat.

How to protect your dog's paws in winter?

In winter, it is also worth taking care of your dog's paws. Frozen snow and ice can cause frostbite and irritation of the delicate pads. Additionally, salt spread on sidewalks can get into wounds and cause severe pain.

Ointment for dog paws

To prevent this, you can use special ointments to apply to the paws, which moisturize the pads and create a barrier protecting against damage. Do not use hand creams for humans or other substitute methods because licking such a product off the paws can cause poisoning! Ointments dedicated to dogs will be safe for them.

Dog boots

Some owners also choose dog boots designed like socks, but for four paws. However, many dogs may not feel comfortable wearing them. Touching the paws is often problematic, especially if the pet was not accustomed to it during puppyhood. And putting on such boots is an even greater psychological discomfort. Additionally, if made from inappropriate material, they can cause the dog to slip, which is very dangerous and can lead to injuries.

How to care for your dog's fur in winter?

There is one more grooming aspect worth remembering. Due to the fur change, the dog may need brushing more often than usual. Especially when the fur is long, lack of proper care can lead to matting, which will be difficult to remove without a groomer's help. Brushing will also help control the amount of fur left by the dog on furniture and carpets.

Additional tips for dog owners

You should also remember that in winter, the temperature inside the house usually rises due to heating. This can be uncomfortable for the dog. Therefore, it is worth allowing them to choose their resting place independently; do not force the dog to lie, for example, near a radiator.

Sudden temperature changes when going out for a walk are also not beneficial for the body. To reduce the risk of catching a cold, let your dog get used to the outside conditions before setting off on a longer route. Try to keep moving continuously, which will ensure natural heat generation by the body. After returning home, wipe your dog if their fur is wet.

Proper preparation for winter is very important for your dog's health and comfort. All activities, such as buying clothing and paw care ointments, should be planned well before winter. The process of getting your dog used to wearing a coat or touching and applying ointment to the pads can be lengthy.

Immunity-boosting supplements should also be given earlier because the effects appear only after 3-4 weeks. That is why planning and preparing for winter well in advance is so important. You never know when low temperatures and the first snow will surprise you.
