How to take care of a dog's teeth?

Dog Teeth Hygiene?

Bacterial plaque constantly builds up on teeth. This happens both to us and to our pets. Therefore, we should remember to clean our dog's teeth to avoid problems.

Unfortunately, oral hygiene for our four-legged friends is often a forgotten topic. We should take care of dogs' teeth from puppyhood. We get involved in such activities even when puppies have baby teeth. For puppies, it is worth massaging the gums daily. This helps prepare the dog's gums better for the appearance of permanent teeth and makes them better adapted to biting hard things in the future.

Dog Teeth Hygiene – How Do We Do It?

We have several options here and a wide range of products designed for dogs. In the area of oral hygiene, we can distinguish two approaches – passive and active.

Active Approach – Brushing Dog Teeth

The active approach involves brushing the dog's teeth.

What Do We Use to Clean Dog Teeth?

There are many products and gadgets available on the market dedicated to dog teeth. These include gels, pastes, toothbrushes, silicone finger covers, and wipes soaked with cleaning agents.

It is important to remember never to use toothpaste meant for humans. Dog toothpaste is adapted to dogs' needs, and only those should be used. You can also buy toothpaste with flavors like chicken.

It is worth choosing the right toothbrush. It is best to consult with your dog's veterinarian.

In active hygiene, besides brushing, there is a second option: massaging the gums and teeth using a gel. Oral hygiene gels are antibacterial, made with zinc or chlorhexidine. Consult your veterinarian about the choice of gel.

Passive Oral Hygiene – What Is It About?

Passive but tasty! Passive oral hygiene involves giving your dog chew treats. Hard chews help mechanically remove bacterial plaque. They can be given even daily. Dogs love receiving such treats.

Among chews, you can look for those containing seaweed or chlorophyll. There are so many products on the market that every owner will surely find something suitable for their dog.

What Are the Consequences If We Don’t Clean the Dog’s Teeth?

Bacteria constantly appear in the mouth. They come from saliva or food. Bacteria multiply, especially if teeth are not cleaned. If plaque is not removed, it settles on the teeth and mineralizes, forming tartar. This leads to tooth decay and gum inflammation. The dog feels discomfort and even pain. Moreover, it results in a very unpleasant smell from the dog's mouth. Consequently, it often becomes necessary to surgically remove teeth or perform oral sanitation procedures on the dog.

How Often Should You Brush Your Dog’s Teeth?

Ideally, you should clean your dog's teeth daily, at least once a day.

How to Prepare Your Dog for Teeth Cleaning?

Like any hygiene or grooming procedure, you need to get your dog used to teeth cleaning. Start from the very first moments when the puppy arrives at your home.

Stress-Free Teeth Cleaning

We want the activities performed with the dog to be stress-free. We always divide the whole process into small steps and reward each of them to create positive associations for the dog. We carefully observe the dog's behavior. We do not rush. We can only move to the next step if the previous one has been properly worked through – meaning the dog shows no signs of stress, is calm and relaxed.

Prepare some tasty treats and get started! Repeat the individual steps several times. Reward the dog with tasty bites.

Steps to get your dog used to teeth brushing:

1. Start by touching the lips. Touch briefly.

2. Gently lift the lips.

3. Touch the gums and teeth, making finger movements like brushing teeth.

End the session. Next time, try the same actions using a gauze wrapped around your finger, then a gauze soaked with gel. You can also try a toothbrush dedicated to dogs. Gradually increase the time spent on the activity.

Remember – You Can Consult a Specialist!

It is best to undergo such training with your dog under the supervision of a specialist. First, visit a veterinarian to choose the right cleaning product, then ask for support from a behaviorist. Cleaning your dog's teeth prevents medical problems caused by lack of hygiene, and medical training under a specialist’s guidance prevents stress in your dog.
