Depression in Dogs - Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

What is dog depression, how to prevent it, and how to treat it?

Depression in the dog world?

Depression is often called a civilization disease. Its occurrence in humans is significantly influenced by lifestyle. The situation is similar in dogs. Animals can also experience depression, and since they cannot verbally communicate their emotions, it often remains undiagnosed for a long time. Ignoring the symptoms by the owner can even lead to the pet's death. Therefore, it is worth knowing what symptoms indicate depression in a dog and how to deal with it.

Symptoms of dog depression

The most common symptoms indicating depression include:

  • emotional indifference,

  • lack of response to stimuli,

  • reluctance to perform previously enjoyed activities,

  • excessive sleepiness,

  • spending less time on physical activity in favor of lying down,

  • reduced exploration,

  • lower alertness,

  • decreased appetite.

During the course of the illness, periods of irritability also appear. Similar symptoms accompany post-traumatic stress disorder, but in that case, they are caused by traumatic events. Depression does not have to be preceded by such an event.

Causes of dog depression

The most common causes of depression in dogs are:

  • strong, long-lasting changes,

  • neglect by the caregiver,

  • insufficient physical activity,

  • persistent stress,

  • deprivation of companionship from people and animals,

  • unmet basic needs.

It is often difficult to clearly identify the cause. The illness may develop over many months or appear suddenly. Not all symptoms need to occur simultaneously. The appearance of several (or even just one) should alert the owner and prompt seeking help.

Dog depression is a dangerous disease

Symptoms of depression can be very dangerous. Reduced physical activity and lack of appetite disrupt the functioning of the entire body. Essential nutrients for its operation stop being supplied. Lack of physical effort leads to further mood decline. This is a vicious circle that can even result in the animal's death. Therefore, it is crucial not to ignore any symptoms appearing in a dog. Since they are nonspecific, meaning they can accompany various illnesses, the dog's physical health should be checked first. A veterinarian will order and perform appropriate tests. If no somatic cause is found, help should be sought from a behaviorist. A person experienced in working with dogs will assess the pet's relationship with the owner and other animals in the home (if any). Based on observations, they will likely identify the cause of depression and help guide therapy. In some cases, combining behaviorist intervention with pharmacological treatment may be necessary. However, it is important to remember that all medications should be consulted with a veterinarian and purchased from a reliable source. Before starting pharmacological treatment, it is worth putting effort into therapy under the supervision of a behaviorist. All chemical agents given to a dog burden the body, mainly the kidneys and liver.

Can dog depression be prevented?

Depression can and should be prevented long before the first symptoms appear. It is important to meet all the dog's needs. Remember walks, play, chewing and gnawing, the need for contact with humans and other dogs. Maintaining a proper diet and providing adequate outdoor exercise are also essential. Everything that helps maintain the pet's good mental condition is recommended. As an owner, you should also minimize stress in the dog's life, which is one of the conditions for well-being. Maintain daily rituals, introduce changes gradually, and do not neglect the owner-dog relationship.

Depression leads to the wasting of the dog's body

Depression in dogs is a very dangerous disease. Although the problem starts in the psyche, symptoms affect the entire body. Lack of appetite, reluctance to move, and general apathy lead to gradual wasting of the body. Lack of response can even lead to the dog's death. Symptoms of depression should not be ignored because the longer action is delayed, the harder it will be to help the pet.

When is specialist help needed?

The key to a dog's well-being is primarily ensuring the animal's comfort, meeting its needs, providing companionship, and a sense of security. If the problem arises despite this, help should be sought from people with the appropriate qualifications to provide it. A good behaviorist will be able to assess what the pet lacks, how to conduct therapy, and, in consultation with a veterinarian, select medications if necessary. Depression is a serious disorder that should not be dealt with alone. Despite good intentions, it is very easy to harm the dog without specialist help. Therefore, preventing depression and seeking appropriate help when it occurs is very important.
