What to feed a dog with diarrhea? What to give a dog to help it feel better quickly.

Diarrhea in dogs is one of the most common digestive problems that pet owners encounter. It can appear suddenly – after a change of food, eating something during a walk, or as a result of stress. Although in many cases it is not a serious illness, it is always a signal that the dog's digestive system needs support.

The most important role in recovery is played by the right diet. Easily digestible food can calm the intestines, reduce irritation, and help the dog return to normal functioning faster.

In this guide you will learn:

·       what to feed a dog with diarrhea

·       what to give a dog with digestive problems

·       which products help calm a dog's stomach

·       what absolutely not to give a dog with diarrhea

·       when a visit to the veterinarian is necessary

1. Why does a dog have diarrhea

Diarrhea in dogs is a natural reaction of the body to something that irritates the digestive system. The intestines speed up their work to remove harmful substances from the body as quickly as possible.

The most common causes of diarrhea in dogs are:

or   sudden change of food

or   eating something spoiled

or   food intolerance

or   allergy to food ingredients

or   bacterial infections

or   parasites

or   stress

Digestive problems often start much earlier, before diarrhea appears. In many dogs, the first sign is bloating or excessive gas passing. If a dog regularly has gas after eating, it may mean that its diet is not properly balanced or contains ingredients that are hard to digest.

2. Symptoms of diarrhea in dogs

Diarrhea in dogs is often accompanied by other symptoms that can help assess the animal's health.

The most common symptoms are:

or   frequent bowel movements

or   very soft or watery stool

or   loss of appetite

or   weakness

or   abdominal pain

or   bloating

or   excessive gas passing

If vomiting, blood in the stool, or severe weakness appear along with diarrhea, contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.

3. What to give a dog for diarrhea

The basic rule is to provide easily digestible products that do not burden the dog's digestive system.

In adult dogs, a short fast lasting about 12 hours is often used. This allows the intestines to rest and calms the irritated digestive system.

After this time, a light diet can be introduced.

The most recommended products are:

cooked white rice
cooked skinless chicken
cooked turkey
cooked carrot
pumpkin puree

Such food is easy to digest and helps stabilize intestinal function.

4. Diet for a dog with diarrhea – what a dog can eat

The most commonly used diet for digestive problems is chicken with rice.

Rice stabilizes the intestines, and chicken provides easily digestible protein. The most commonly used ratio is:

70% rice
30% meat

Food should be given in small portions but more often than usual – even 4 or 5 times a day.

Also works well:

or   cooked carrot

or   pumpkin

or   cooked turkey

5. Is wet or dry food better

Many caregivers wonder whether a dog with stomach problems should eat dry or wet food. Wet food contains more water and is often easier to digest, so it works better for some dogs during digestive problems. On the other hand, dry food is often a more concentrated source of energy.

In practice, everything depends on the reaction of the specific dog and the quality of the food. We described the differences between these feeding methods in more detail in the article about when wet or dry dog food.

6. Home remedies for relieving diarrhea in dogs

In many cases, diarrhea in dogs subsides after using an easily digestible diet and proper hydration. Besides changing the food, there are also several home remedies that can help alleviate symptoms and support the dog's digestive system.

Rice porridge and easily digestible diet

One of the most commonly recommended home remedies is rice porridge or very well-cooked rice with added carrots. Such food is gentle on the stomach and helps stabilize intestinal function.

Often, boiled rice with carrots is also used, which soothes the digestive tract and provides the dog with energy without overloading the intestines.

This type of easily digestible diet is the first step in cases of mild diarrhea.

Activated charcoal for dogs

Activated charcoal is a well-known remedy used for poisoning and stomach problems. Its action involves binding toxins in the digestive tract, allowing them to be removed from the body more quickly.

Some caregivers give dogs activated charcoal for mild digestive issues, but it is always worth consulting a veterinarian about the dosage first.

Kaolin clay and bentonite

Veterinary preparations used for diarrhea often contain substances such as kaolin clay or bentonite. They have adsorptive properties – they help bind toxins and excess water in the intestines.

These ingredients are found in many veterinary preparations intended for dogs with intestinal problems.

Probiotics and preparations restoring intestinal flora

During diarrhea, the balance of intestinal microflora is often disturbed. Therefore, probiotics and prebiotics that support the restoration of intestinal bacteria can be helpful.

Many specialized intestinal flora rebuilding preparations are available on the market. These products help stabilize intestinal function and shorten the duration of diarrhea.

Hydration of the dog is crucial

During diarrhea, the dog loses a lot of fluids, so it is extremely important to provide constant access to fresh water. In some cases, the veterinarian may also recommend electrolytes for animals.

If the dog does not want to drink water or is very weak, a quick veterinary consultation may be necessary.

7. Can diarrhea be a symptom of a food allergy

If diarrhea occurs regularly after eating, it may be a sign of a food allergy or intolerance to food ingredients.

The most common allergens in dog food are:

§  chicken

§  beef

§  grains

§  soy

In such cases, it is often necessary to switch to a more specialized diet. A well-chosen dog food for allergic dogs allows limiting ingredients that may trigger reactions in the body.

8. Can you give treats to a dog

During acute diarrhea, it is best to completely avoid treats.

After symptoms subside, you can gradually return to a normal diet. Many owners then reach for natural additives that support digestion, such as beef tripe  , which contain bacteria that support the dog's intestinal microflora.

9. How often to feed a dog during diarrhea

Instead of two large meals a day, it is better to feed smaller portions.

The best approach is:

4–5 small meals a day.

This way, the dog's digestive system is not overloaded.

10. How much food should a dog get

After diarrhea subsides, gradually return to a normal diet. It is very important to adjust the amount of food to the size of the dog, its age, and activity level.

If you are unsure about the right amount of food, a guide explaining how much food a dog needs in the daily diet can be helpful.

11. Does a dog's diet depend on the breed

Dogs' nutritional needs can vary depending on the breed.

Small dogs often have a faster metabolism and need a more calorie-rich diet. Different needs will have a small Maltipoo,  and others very active Jack Russell,  therefore, the diet should be tailored to the dog's lifestyle.

12. How to prevent diarrhea in a dog

Although digestive problems cannot always be avoided, proper prevention can significantly reduce the risk of their occurrence.

The most important rules are:

§  gradual change of food

§  feeding good quality food

§  avoiding table scraps

§  monitoring the composition of the food

§  regular deworming of the dog

For dogs with sensitive digestive systems, choosing the right diet is especially important.

 13. When diarrhea in a dog is dangerous

Contact a veterinarian if:

§  diarrhea lasts longer than 48 hours

§  blood appears in the stool

§  dog is vomiting

§  dog is very weak

§  dog does not want to drink water

Diarrhea is especially dangerous in puppies and older dogs because it can quickly lead to dehydration.
