Introduction
Many owners wonder if their dog can cry like a human. After all, if they feel joy, anger, fear, and each of these emotions is quite recognizable and easy to observe, how can you tell when a dog is sad? Noticing wet eyes in a pet, we often associate it with depression. However, dog tearing is most often a health signal, not an emotional one.
Dogs and tearing
Dogs have tear glands and produce tears, but mainly to:
· to moisturize the eye,
· to protect them from infection,
· to wash away dust or small particles.
Excessive tearing may indicate problems such as allergies, conjunctivitis, or blocked tear ducts. In some breeds (e.g., Maltese, Shih Tzu, Yorkies), characteristic brown stains appear under the eyes – this is the result of tears reacting with air and bacteria present on the skin.
However, there is no scientific evidence that tears appear in dogs during emotional moments such as sadness or exceptional joy. This does not mean that dogs do not feel sadness. Certainly, it is an equally difficult feeling for them, although expressed in a different way, it should not be overlooked!
How does a dog express sadness and happiness?
Instead of crying tears, a dog shows emotions through other behaviors that are somewhat easier to notice, such as whining, squeaking, hiding, loss of appetite, or apathy — these are their ways of communicating and asking for support.
In dogs, happiness and joy are mainly expressed through tail wagging, jumping, wagging their whole body, and the characteristic "smile" of the mouth. However, in 2022 scientists Researchers from Japan have discovered something extraordinary – dogs can produce more tears when they meet their owner after a long separation. These are not tears like those of humans, but a physiological reaction of the body to a flood of emotions. So, you could say that a dog "cries" with joy, although not in the way we understand it in humans.
Dogs have an extraordinary ability to tune in – if you are sad, your pet will likely be calmer and more subdued.
Human crying vs. dog "crying"
| Feature | Human | Dog |
|---|---|---|
| Emotional tears | Yes (sadness, joy) | No – tears only physiological |
| Expression of sadness | Crying with tears, facial expression | Whining, squeaking, body posture |
| Cause of tearing | Emotions, irritations | Health problems (allergies, conjunctivitis) |
Summary
Although dogs do not express sadness in the same way as humans, it does not mean they feel it less. If you notice signs of depression or apathy in your dog – start carefully observing their mood, as it may be a consequence of a hidden illness or canine depression. A consistent routine, closeness, warmth, and understanding are also important. Show your dog that they can always feel safe with you!
