Safe snacks. What treats do puppies love?

The puppy stage is a unique phase in every dog's life. Practically every decision the owner makes during this time affects how the pet will develop. Choosing the right food is just as important as training cleanliness, walking on a leash, and getting used to new stimuli. Owners often forget that besides examining the food's ingredients, they should also pay attention to the quality of the treats given. Although they are only a small addition to the diet, they can have a significant impact on the puppy's health.

Treats can be started once the dog fully masters eating solid food and stops drinking mother's milk. This is also when good habits related to giving treats should be introduced.

When to give a dog treats?

The owner decides when and why the dog receives treats. It should not be allowed for the puppy to demand them. It is worth teaching the dog that a treat is an incentive to perform an action or a reward for desired behavior. This will make working with the dog easier in the future because food will encourage it to act. It will also eliminate the risk of giving too many treats. Having a specific purpose for giving treats makes it easier to plan and control the amount of food entering the dog's stomach.

Tips for choosing treats for puppies

  • All treats given to the puppy should be safe above all. If the dog is allergic to any ingredient, products containing it should be avoided. Even a small amount of such a substance can cause an allergic reaction.

  •
Treats should be suited to the size of the dog. Small puppies should not be given large-sized treats.

  •
Pay attention to the texture of the treat. It should not be too hard. The higher the product's moisture, the softer it is and the easier it is to chew. For a puppy just learning to use its teeth properly, semi-moist treats that dissolve in contact with saliva are safer.

Dried meat in various forms—strips, chips, or slices—is an excellent treat for all puppies. The proper drying process ensures the meat is slightly chewy, does not crumble, and is completely safe for the puppy's gums and teeth. The right texture allows the owner to easily divide the treat into smaller pieces and adjust it to the dog's needs.

  • Always pay attention to the ingredients. Remember that treats should not contain any artificial additives. Dried meat does not need them. It is a valuable product on its own.

Natural chews can also be chosen as treats. Dried cod skin? Why not? It will be a functional treat because it satisfies the strong need to chew and bite that every dog has. Additionally, it helps maintain dental hygiene and keeps the pet occupied for a longer time, effectively using up excess energy. Remember to always supervise the dog when giving such treats, especially if they are large, as they can crumble while chewing.

Leftovers from dinner for the dog? No way!

It is unacceptable to give dogs human food as treats. Spices used in cooking are very harmful to dogs, and many products can be deadly toxic. Chocolate, nuts, grapes and raisins, garlic, onions, chives, as well as coffee, tea, and alcohol must never be given. Also avoid giving cooked meat with bones. Why? After heat treatment, bones become very brittle, and sharp edges can seriously damage the dog's digestive tract.

Some vegetables and fruits can be chosen to supplement the diet: apple (without seeds), banana, carrot, or beetroot. However, few dogs find these attractive enough to serve as a reward for good behavior. It is better to choose treats that will entice the dog with their taste and aroma and encourage activity.

Treats made for puppies

Have you ever seen ads presenting treats as products specially made for puppies? Their ingredients mainly include grains, unnecessary additives, and artificial flavors designed to make the dog eat them, but the same effect can be achieved with a much healthier alternative in the form of natural chews and dried meat. It is important to introduce healthy habits from the very beginning of giving treats because over time it will be harder to change them.

Rules for serving treats to dogs

Besides the above aspects, it is also worth remembering a few other rules for giving treats.

  • First, the dog must always have access to fresh water to quench its thirst if needed (eating a chew can be really tiring).

  •  Each treat should be introduced gradually and carefully because new products in a puppy's diet can cause digestive problems or reveal previously undiscovered food allergies.

  •  It is also worth supervising the dog while eating treats, especially if the owner feels they are difficult to consume (hard, large, sharp-edged, crumbly).

  •  When choosing a healthy diet, it is also important to ensure the high quality of treats so that together they form a whole that supports the healthy development of the puppy.
