Dog in a diaper? Necessity or whim? Just a few years ago, it might have seemed strange, but today more and more caregivers use this solution. Dog diapers are not a whim but a practical aid in many situations – from support with puppies, through heat cycles in females, to health problems or the pet’s old age. They make it easier to maintain hygiene at home, and the dog has a better quality of life.

 

Potty training puppies – yes or no?

 

Puppies need time to learn to relieve themselves outside. Diapers help during this transitional period, protecting the home from "accidents." This is a good solution especially for people living in high-rise apartments.

Note: Diapers for puppies can conflict with mats if used daily. Mats are a better tool for potty training, and diapers should be treated as a temporary and emergency solution. Why? A hygiene mat is a tool that teaches the puppy to relieve itself in in a designated place. Puppy diapers – a more "emergency" solution, usually used in exceptional situations, e.g., when the puppy has a long trip/the owner must leave it for a few hours without the possibility use of a mat or if there are health problems (e.g., urinary incontinence).

  

For older dogs (seniors)

With age, dogs often develop urinary incontinence. Diapers help avoid unpleasant situations and provide the dog with a dignified, peaceful life, even when age-related illnesses become apparent.

 

For females in heat

This is one of the most common reasons caregivers use diapers. They protect furniture, carpets, and beds from stains and help maintain hygiene.

 

After surgery or during illness

A dog after surgery, with neurological, urological, or orthopedic problems often lacks full bladder control. Diapers protect against additional stress during this period and the need for constant cleaning.

 

During travel

Long car, train, or plane rides – diapers provide protection for both the dog and the owner. They reduce the risk of unpleasant situations on the road.

 

 Types of dog diapers

 

🔹 Full diapers (universal)

Resemble baby diapers, worn around the torso and tail. Suitable for female dogs and males in various situations – old age, illness, heat cycle.

 

🔹 Male dog diapers (belly bands)

Special absorbent strips worn only on the belly. Protect against marking territory and urinary incontinence. Comfortable because they restrict movement less than full diapers.

 

🔹 Disposable diapers

Perfect for travel, outings, or short-term use. Easy to dispose of after use, hygienic, but less eco-friendly.

 

🔹 Reusable diapers

Made from washable materials. Eco-friendly and economical – ideal for long-term use (e.g., for seniors).

·         wide availability of sizes – from small Yorkies to huge shepherds or mastiffs

 

❌ Disadvantages and limitations

·         poorly fitted diapers can chafe or pinch,

·         require frequent changing to prevent irritation,

·         they do not replace training and housebreaking – they are only support,

·         dogs with strong temperaments may try to remove them.

 

How to choose a dog diaper?

 

Size – always choose the size according to the dog’s weight and girth. Too small will squeeze, too large will fall off.

Dog’s sex – different models are for males (belts) and females (full diapers).

Coat type – long-haired dogs may require diapers with extra leak protection.

Duration of use – disposable diapers work better for one-time situations, while reusable, washable ones are better for longer use.

Dog comfort – pay attention to whether your pet feels comfortable, walks normally, and does not constantly try to remove them!

 

Hygiene and safety

 

·         Diapers should be changed every few hours to avoid irritation.

·         The dog’s skin should be clean and dry – special wipes for animals can be used.

·         For longer use, it is worth applying protective ointments for the skin (especially for seniors).

Warning: Do not use regular baby diapers – they are not designed for dog anatomy, which can cause leaks and chafing!

In Japan, dog diapers are extremely popular – especially in Tokyo, where many people live in small apartments and travel with dogs on public transport. There are even eco-friendly bamboo diapers designed specifically for allergic animals. More and more hotels                        and dog-friendly boarding facilities require that females in heat wear diapers – it’s part of “dog etiquette.”
