Petsitter - a profession for animal lovers

If you love animals but for some reason cannot have your own, or you want to have contact with them at work, there is a perfect profession for you – petsitter.

This is an increasingly popular profession. Dogwalker, dog nanny, animal caretaker – these roles have recently gained more respect, and their services continue to attract a growing number of clients.

Petsitter services for busy people

Where did this profession come from? The demands of the modern world, longer working hours, small and cramped apartments serving as hotels, business trips, and vacations. Where is there room for a dog? Time for walks, play? What to do with a pet when preparing for a holiday break?

So the cushions don’t explode

Having a dog brings many pleasures and benefits. However, it also involves great responsibility and duties. A dog requires daily walks. This is not just about taking them to the lawn to meet physiological needs and quickly returning home. A four-legged friend needs to release energy, which can only be achieved through longer walks and running around. In the wild, dogs almost constantly roam, move around, and explore new surroundings. Our domestic pets have not lost these instincts. Of course, they should not be let loose on uncontrolled trips, but the amount and length of walks should be adjusted to their energy level, age, and health condition. Solid exercise combined with good playtime will help the dog spend time alone at home better – then it will happily fall into a relaxing sleep and won’t try to release energy by chewing shoes or other valuable household items. Another important point is that a dog is a social animal. It generally does not like to be left alone for long. It needs contact with people, affection, exercises, and learning various tricks.

It often happens that owners cannot meet all the requirements of a dog’s lifestyle. They work more, are away from home longer. Important business trips arise. They decide on luxury vacations where the dog’s presence is not welcome. Sometimes they simply don’t have the strength or are bedridden with a fever. In such moments, a petsitter can be indispensable.

A petsitter can be well paid

In the West, this is a respected and well-paid profession. Although often portrayed in films in a tragicomic way – a young girl, a student, or a lost soul looking for a place in the world, without a plan, tied by leashes to a pack of dogs running down the sidewalk. Or – a gray mouse wrapped in leashes, surrounded by excited dogs. Such scenes rarely happen in reality, especially if the dog nanny has received proper training.

Professional means certified caretaker

In Poland, due to growing demand for such services, training courses for professional petsitters, i.e., animal caretakers, have been created. The course seems like a great opportunity for people who want to responsibly take care of pets, including dogs. Entrusting a pet, even for an hour-long walk, to someone else’s hands is an act of great trust. If those hands are trained, they gain trust more easily.

A certified petsitter is equipped with basic knowledge about interacting with animals (dogs, cats, parrots, reptiles, and others kept at home) and caring for them. They know their nutritional needs, activity requirements, and living conditions. They also have knowledge about first aid and handling emergencies.

Tasks for a petsitter

A petsitter’s work can vary. It depends on their skills, experience, the dog’s needs, and the duties assigned by the owner. Sometimes they simply show up at the dog’s home at scheduled times and take the dog for a walk (dogwalker). If capable, they may take several dogs at once. For long-haired breeds, they may also assist with grooming. Sometimes there is a need to transport the pet to the veterinarian. If qualified, they can expand their services to include training commands. Occasionally, the owner may request additional tasks at home, such as feeding the dog. All details should be discussed at the first meeting.

Caring for a dog brings much pleasure, but it must be remembered that it is a big responsibility – both for your own pet and for the one you have been hired to care for. Although the job may seem simple and insignificant, it actually involves a great deal of trust placed in the petsitter by the owner. A petsitter is often compared to a nanny for children. After all, a dog is a family member who is deeply loved and for whom you want the best.

If you are looking for a petsitter, check their qualifications. Ask other owners; word of mouth works best here. It must be someone not only trained but trustworthy and someone your dog will like.
