Cat - the mysterious companion of humans

Cats have been present in human life for centuries. The beginnings of their domestication can be traced back about 9,000 years ago, when agriculture developed. People stored grain supplies, which attracted rodents such as mice and rats. These, in turn, attracted wild cats, which then began living near humans, helping control the rodent population.

Over time, the relationship between humans and cats began to develop. Cats served not only as effective hunters but also as companions, which significantly influenced their position in human life.

In this article, I will focus on caring for cats that live in our homes. I will highlight their needs and the holistic care for cats that we, as caretakers of these extraordinary creatures, should provide to ensure our cats a healthy and happy life.

Cats' needs

Today, cats are usually considered independent creatures, walking their own paths. Nevertheless, they have their special needs, which we, as caretakers, should take care of so that our furry friend leads a happy and peaceful life in our home.

The first thing that comes to mind regarding cat care is, of course, diet, which is crucial for the health of our ward. Cats are obligate carnivores, which clearly means we should feed them only food rich in animal protein. Choose foods that contain a high meat content. Opt exclusively for wet food. Why? This could be explained at length, but I will focus on the key factors:

  • dry food dehydrates, and cats, which originate from desert areas, have a reduced thirst drive,

  •  dry food strains the kidneys, bladder, and increases the risk of bladder stones (also due to lack of adequate water),

  •  disrupts sugar metabolism, leading to overweight problems,

  •  as a highly processed product - it irritates the intestines.

There is no universal recipe for feeding a cat - each individual's diet should be tailored to their age, weight, health condition, and level of physical activity.

And speaking of physical activity…

Regular exercise is key to the health and well-being of cats. The amount depends on the cat's age, temperament, and health condition. It is worth paying attention to providing a variety of forms of activity. Besides the popular cat wand, we can use a range of different toys, from balls, feathers, through scratching posts, climbing trees, cat highways, obstacle courses, scent games, to play with other animals.

However, we must remember that every cat is different and it is worth observing which forms of activity bring the most joy to our household member. Regular play not only helps maintain physical health and supports the cat's mental and emotional health but also promotes building and strengthening bonds with the caregiver.

Since I mentioned bonds, it is also worth mentioning the need for social contacts.

We must remember above all that cats are territorial animals and it is necessary to provide them with adequate living space where they will feel safe. Equally important are interactions with the caregiver. Cats often desire contact and closeness with humans (of course, not all) and communicate through various sounds and body language, so it is important for caregivers to recognize their needs and emotions. Spending time together, petting, and creating a safe environment promote building a good relationship, and meeting these social needs affects the mental and physical health of our cats, which of course is reflected in their long and happy life.

And last but not least - hygiene.

Cats are animals that take great care of their cleanliness. Our task is to provide them with the best care also in this aspect. It is worth considering primarily:

  • an appropriate size, number, and placement of litter boxes in our home, their regular cleaning, and choosing the right litter;

  •  oral hygiene, including regular tooth brushing;

  •  brushing the fur, which ensures the removal of dead hair and dirt;

  •  claw care;

  •  in special cases, baths;

  •  and of course regular visits to the veterinarian.

However, let's remember that every cat is different, and an individual approach to our cat's needs is the foundation for a successful relationship with our furry friend.
